There has been a significant change within the staff of the Dean of Students Office. Former Dean of Students Jeffrey Huang has become the vice president of student affairs. This position puts him in charge of the entire Dean of Students Office, including housing, residential life, advising, counseling, the student activities office, career services, the Athenaeum, International Place, central student services with the other colleges, dining, and basically all life outside of the classroom. The position was formerly held by Torrey Sun, who chose to move to the development office and take the position of executive director of principal gifts, which involves raising money for the college. The decision for the change took place very quickly last spring, and has been effective since the start of this academic year.
Huang has worked in the Dean of Students Office for 12 years. Regarding his goals for the job, Huang says, "It's tough to say, because I'm not an outsider who came in here and said, 'well this is what immediately needs attention,' … [but] I see 100 little subtle things that I can do to make the quality of the experience better for students; to seize opportunities that we haven't taken advantage of in the past." He has already made some changes, most notably appointing Jennifer Jimenez Marana as a dean specifically for freshmen. Marana will help students get settled and feel comfortable during their first year at CMC.
Some action has been taken regarding the presence of alcohol on the CMC campus. "We've talked a little about alcohol, though I don't think the changes I've made are ones that Dean Sun wouldn't have made either, specifically ASCMC with their spending. They have to make sure that they're generating income; they can't be using student body money to purchase alcohol with. They have a plan for that."
Sun's reaction is that he "[doesn't] see them as changes." He emphasizes that ASCMC has always had to fund its own alcohol purchases, and regarding the pressure that the administration is exerting on ASCMC he says, "That started with me. Don't blame Jeff for that." He notes that alcohol on campus is something that will always need to be managed.
