In the first quarter, Claremont McKenna's endowment fell by 14%--with no signs of stopping. President Pamela Gann took precautionary steps in a November letter to the CMC community in which she announced a faculty hiring freeze and a commitment to reduce the College's level of expenditures by $1.5 million, roughly 3% of the budget. She also said that all future construction projects would be temporarily placed on hold for at least a year. …

Claremont McKenna College's Associate Professor of Psychology Shana Levin has co-authored a study, The Diversity Challenge: Social Identity and Intergroup Relations on the College Campus, which tracked 2,000 UCLA students over time and surveyed their attitudes toward race and how various college activities and interactions affected those attitudes. For example, the study found that being roommates with a member of another ethnicity has "a positive impact on racial attitudes [toward] those of other races and ethnicities." …

As voters on November 4th rushed to the polls to cast their ballots in a historic national election, Democrat Steve Bullock (CMC '88) placed the capstone on a campaign run across the Treasure State, winning a hard-fought election for Attorney General of his home state of Montana. Bullock, who majored in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at Claremont McKenna College, says the victory accomplished a goal he's held since law school, when experience managing an attorney general campaign gave him "an appreciation for many aspects of the office. …
