As the 2008-2009 academic year shifted into high gear, the Claremont Independent took note of a historic change at Claremont McKenna's oldest research institution: after 17 years of distinguished leadership and service, Professor of Government Charles R. Kesler passed the mantle of Salvatori Center Director to Professor Mark Blitz, Fletcher Jones Professor of Political Philosophy and Chairman of the Government Department.… Post the First Comment

The entire community of Claremont McKenna College learned this past summer of a $75 million gift from the The Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Foundation that would be used for the construction of a state-of-the-art facility on the west side of campus, designed by internationally acclaimed architect Rafael Viñoly.… Post the First Comment

During its short twelve years on campus, the Claremont Independent has attracted some of Claremont McKenna's best and brightest. These past two years alone Elise Viebeck CMC '10 and John Wilson CMC '07 won back-to-back Breindel awards, with the accompanying internships and $10,000 prizes.… Post the First Comment

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Professor Jon Shields, who came on staff last year with the CMC Government department, to discuss his new course "American Culture Wars," open for registration spring 2009. When I first heard of the course proposal, as a culture war "veteran" myself, I was guardedly excited; I believed it would take an authentically deep thinker with an abiding passion for and understanding of the human condition to truly do these issues justice.… Post the First Comment
